Wyclef Jean brings the Carnival to Emporia
Wyclef Jean brought the Carnival Tour to the Emporia Granada Theatre Sunday night. Jean’s high energy wowed the crowd during the interactive show, where the audience was encouraged to dance, jump and sing along to a wide selection of his hits with The Fugees, as well as records he produced for artists like Shakira and Santana. Show openers Culture Crew, an acoustic soul pop band based out of Southern California, had the audience dancing with their island-inspired beats. Lauryn Hill typically applies a dizzying spin to her classic hits whenever she hits town, and her former Fugees group mate Wyclef Jean is adding his own twist to his music. 5. Watch Wyclef Jean freestyle during his rehearsal with SLSO
It's been a while since Fugees alum Wyclef Jean has played St. Louis; Friday's "Night of Symphonic Hip Hop," was a pretty spectacular return.  SLSO invited the press in for a sneak peek during rehearsals, and we happily took them up on the offer. We were wowed by the fact that there would only be one rehearsal—yes, one!—before the night's performance. It's a testament to the talent and professionalism of all involved, including Jean, the symphony orchestra, conductor Gemma New, vocalist Moira Mack, and Jean's "rebel band."  Read more: stlmag.com

A New Sound at the Symphony
She is not new to conducting, but the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra's Resident Conductor, Gemma New, is certainly new to the idea of being swept off her feet... live at Powell Hall! At the close of the phenomenal concert Friday of "A Symphonic Night of Hip Hop Featuring Wyclef Jean," the singer/producer lifted New from her conducting post and carried her, like a new bride, off the stage, quite literally sweeping her off her feet. "It was definitely a first," New says of the surprise gesture. But perhaps it just went with the flow of the show. After all, Jean nearly crowd surfed by running through the rows of guests, even making it upstairs to the fans singing along from the balcony.  Read more: sophisticatedstlouis.com

  9. Wyclef Jean performs live, backed by The Jacksonville Symphony
We've heard it done before, that is to say, classical music sampled in hip hop. But it's a sure bet that musical genius Wyclef Jean will bring things to this performance that are both technically marvelous and aurally thrilling. Source: folioweekly.com
  10. Mixing hip-hop with symphonic sounds is nothing new for Wyclef Jean
Hip-hop artists mixing it up with classical and symphonic sounds is nothing new, especially for Wyclef Jean. “It’s a very natural fit for me,” says the rapper-producer, who performs Friday with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra at Powell Hall. “It’s like drinking water for me.” His music has always been eclectic. He points out that, in the early 2000s, he was the first rapper to perform at Carnegie Hall, and his hit “Gone Till November” with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra goes back to 1997.
